Valentine’s Day At Deutsch

By: Deutsch Fine Jewelry

For a holiday based on love and affection, it seems like there are plenty of folks out there who are ready to be a Valentine’s Day Scrooge. Despite the holiday being dismissed as a concoction from Hallmark to sell more cards, Valentine’s Day has a storied tradition and a beautiful history that dates back to the beginnings of the Catholic Church. The date was chosen because the Roman Empire martyred two different Christian men, both named Valentine, on the 14th of February in the third century. From February 13th to 15th in Roman society, there was also a pagan festival of Lupercalia — a debaucherous festival that included animal sacrifice and drunken disorderliness. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be Valentine’s Day in an effort to honor the slayed Valentines and to replace the pagan tradition of Lupercalia. Ever since this replacement by the Catholic Church, Valentine’s Day has evolved into the celebration of love and romance that we know today. Shakespeare and Chaucer both romanticized Valentine’s Day in their works, crowning it as the most romantic day on our calendar. Make our storied tradition of love and romance the perfect day for her with a brand-new gift from Deutsch.
